VOOM’s new POW® Plant range of vegan energy bars are simply great-tasting and healthy snack bars with the health and performance advantages of beetroot, but crucially are an enjoyable alternative to the beetroot shots that many athletes tend to use. So why should you include them in your training and event nutrition strategy?

The Benefits of Beetroot

Each bar is packed with the equivalent of a medium sized beet and therefore the associated dietary nitrates. The health and performance benefits of nitrates are widely researched, you can read in more detail about how nitrates can boost your performance. Dietary nitrates cause a Nitric Oxide boost in the blood which in turn can help lower blood pressure and improve arterial blood flow through vasodilation of capillaries. This enhanced blood flow has been found to aid sporting performance in a range of research trials and studies.

Multiple carb sources

POW® plants combine different sources of carbohydrates to energise all day with fast-acting, simple sugars from raspberries, grape juice, and apple juice concentrate. Gluten free oats provide longer chain complex carbohydrates which offer more sustained energy - together they’ll keep you going for maximum endurance.

Added energy from MCTs

Healthy medium chain triglycerides, known as MCTs, which are a naturally occurring fat source found in coconut, can enhance endurance through increased mitochondria metabolism. As an energy source MCTs are reported to have a glycogen sparing effect, boosting endurance during a workout. In addition, MCTs may even promote weight control by improving fat metabolism.

Plant-based Energy Bars

As the name suggests Pow® Plants are entirely plant based and we believe they’re some of the best tasting vegan energy bars out there. The natural and healthy ingredients include gluten-free oats, apple juice, grape juice, desiccated coconut and obviously beetroot!

Great Tasting energy bar

As with all products in the VOOM range we strive for great tasting sports nutrition solutions which we can actually enjoy using in training and competition. The first flavour in the range, the Raspberry & Beetroot, has already won a Great Taste award! We invested a great deal of time in developing and tweaking the bars to achieve the perfect taste profiles, and we’re sure you’ll love the results! The Raspberry & Beetroot is now joined by a Beetroot, Rhubarb & Ginger variant as well as Beetroot and Cacao.

When to use POW® Plants

The POW® plant bars are versatile and can be used in a range of situations.

1) For the performance-driven we recommend 1 - 2 bars daily for 3 days before you compete; this is because dietary nitrates have been shown to boost blood nitrite levels and aid performance. Another bar around 2-3 hours before competition will keep blood nitrite at peak levels. Read more about the importance of nitrates for athletes here.

2) Secondly the beetroot POW® Plant bars are endurance energy bars, so they’re perfect for eating out on a longer ride, run or hike - anytime you need to keep your energy topped up. VOOM ambassadors have used them to great effect as part of their strategy during ultra-running events, triathlons and even around climbing competitions.

3) POW® plant energy bars can also make a healthy snack bar as part of your daily life for example when you need a quick snack after work and before you train. They’re also the perfect tasty snack between main meals throughout the day or when you want a light snack before a morning run.
