What do energy bars contain?
Most energy bars aim to supply some form of carbohydrates whilst some also offer protein. Carbohydrates can be fast acting cabrs such as maltodextrin, simple sugars like glucose or fructose or complex carbs such as those found in oats. Some energy bars use a blend of fast-acting simple carbs with some complex carbs. Performance orientated energy bars, such as the Voom Pocket Rocket range, can also contain ingredients such as caffeine, taurine, beta alanine, b-vitamins and electrolytes varying depending on intended use.
What do energy bars do?
Put simply, energy bars provide energy in order to maintain, or slightly elevate, the body's blood sugars during exercise. The extra energy delivery to working muscles mean contractions can be stronger, more frequent or repeated for a longer duration, and thus improve athletic performance. For cycling gels and bars are common place and they keep energy supplies topped up during prolonged exercise.
Are energy bars healthy?
Whilst many energy bars contain a large amount of sugar, the intended use of them in a sport or activity-based setting means they aren't necessarily unhealthy. During exercise the sugars in an energy bar are used by the working muscles. Obvioulsy energy bars should be consumed in moderation and as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
