Fresh off the podium with a 3rd place in her age group at Gralloch Gravel, Marie-Louise sat down with us to chat about the highs, the challenges, and the power of being fuelled right. Gralloch isn’t your average gravel race, it’s wild, remote, and raw. Here’s what went down on race day.
Congrats on finishing third place in your AG! How did the race go?

I had a great race. It was my third year at The Gralloch and I just love the area, the course, and the whole chilled vibe of the event. The warm, sunny weather and no wind made it perfect, couldn’t have asked for better conditions.
What was your first impression arriving at Gralloch, weather, terrain, vibes?
The camping field was massively improved this year, great toilets and showers. The event village was fun with food stalls, a bar, and a stage with pro rider interviews. The course itself was very dry, which meant it was super dusty. Some parts had really chunky gravel too, which was tough on the body.
Was there a moment during the race where you thought, "This is why I ride"?
Yes, just being out there in that landscape, riding strong, and knowing I’d trained well. Even when things weren’t going perfectly, it still felt like a privilege to be racing in such a beautiful place.
What was your biggest “dig deep” moment on the course?
Early on, a rock got stuck in my front chain ring on the first climb and jammed my chain. I lost sight of the riders I’d planned to stay with and had to really push to catch up. I also had a couple dropped chains (user error!) later on which didn’t help, but I kept going.
Any unexpected moments; wildlife, weather shifts, mechanicals, kindness from other riders?
Definitely those chain issues. And just how hot it was! I was glad I’d prepared for hydration.
What did your fuelling strategy look like and how did it play out on race day?

I used a mix of VOOM Fusion Fuel and VOOM Hydrate, along with loads of Pocket Rocket energy bars, fig rolls, and some nuts. At the pit stops I topped up my bottles and grabbed a few orange segments and bananas. The Pocket Rockets really helped when I felt like I was slowing down, they give such a solid boost.
How did VOOM products help you manage the demands of gravel versus road or MTB trails?
Gravel is unpredictable, you’re constantly adjusting effort levels. VOOM made it easy to stay fuelled without faff. I love how simple the Pocket Rockets are to eat on the go, and the Fusion Fuel was perfect for keeping hydrated under pressure.
Did you make any last-minute kit or nutrition choices you’re now glad (or regret) you made?
Not a last-minute decision, but I never race without Butt Buttr chamois cream. Absolute essential. That chunky gravel is unforgiving.
What does gravel racing offer you that other disciplines don’t?

Freedom from traffic, beautiful scenery, and a welcoming community. Gravel is a great sport for all ages, it just feels like an adventure.
Quick Fire Round:
-
One song that sums up your ride? Something upbeat and gritty, I didn’t have headphones in, but something like Born to Run!
-
One snack you craved that wasn’t in your jersey pocket? Salt & vinegar crisps!
-
The piece of kit you wouldn’t race Grolloch without? Butt Buttr. 100%.
First thing you did post-race?
Straight to the loo! I didn’t want to stop on course because I knew the 4th place rider wasn’t far behind—she finished only four minutes after me.
Would you go back or recommend it to others? Why?
Absolutely. It’s a friendly event in a stunning location. Well organised, great vibe, and a course that keeps you honest.
What advice would you give to a VOOM customer considering their first gravel race?
Stay hydrated, keep your energy topped up, and don’t be afraid to push through the tough bits. VOOM helped me stay on top of everything, fuelling right makes a huge difference.
Which VOOM product came into its own out there and when?
The Pocket Rockets, hands down. When I was feeling like I was slowing, they gave me exactly the lift I needed to keep pushing.
