Sodium Bicarb Calculator
Sodium bicarbonate acts as an extracellular buffering agent, helping to neutralise the accumulation of hydrogen ions produced during high-intensity exercise (Siegler et al, 2016).
This can delay the onset of fatigue and improve performance in activities involving repeated bouts of intense effort or sustained exercise lasting approximately 1–10 minutes (Grgic et al, 2021).
To maximise the performance benefits of sodium bicarbonate, please select the options below to determine your personalised serving size and optimal bicarb dose and timing. Learn more about using bicarb to boost performance in our blog article.

How to Take Sodium Bicarbonate for Maximum Lactate Buffering and Stomach Comfort. After using the sodium bicarb calculator to work out how much bicarb to use, we recommend the following tips to maximise stomach comfort, and avoid stomach upset.
- Take capsules 30 minutes after a meal or carb-rich snack, never on an empty stomach.
(Maughan et al, 2018). - Split your serving into 2–3 smaller doses taken 20–30 minutes apart to reduce bloating or nausea. (Douroudos et al, 2006).
- Swallow each portion with 200–250ml of water, around 500ml total.
(McNaughton et al, 2016). - Avoid high-fat or high-fibre foods close to ingestion.
(Lattimer and Haub, 2010). - If you feel discomfort, drop to a smaller serving next time and build up gradually.
(Lopes-Silva and Correia-Oliveira, 2023).
